Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless water heaters, first introduced in the 1990s, are also called instantaneous or on-demand water heaters. They provide an unlimited supply of hot water, no matter how much you use. This is possible because they heat water directly, without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. A gas burner or a source of electricity heats the water. This allows it to deliver a constant supply of hot water through your pipes and to your faucet.
Different types of tankless water heaters:
- Conventional tank water heaters: These heaters use electricity and gas for fuel. They can heat anywhere from 20 to 100 gallons of water at a time. These units are less economical than modern tankless heaters.
- Solar water heaters: These economical and environmentally friendly heaters draw energy from the sun to heat water. They require no electricity or gas and can reduce your bills by an estimated 14 to 18%.
- Gas units: Gas water heaters incur higher upfront costs than electric options, but they can save money long-term due to the low cost of natural gas. If you choose a gas heater, it is wise to periodically inspect your gas line, gas valve, and water tank to prevent leaks and sediment buildup. This will prolong the lifespan of your water heater, ensure it is optimally performing, and safeguard your home and family against potential hazards.
Why it’s important to maintain your water heater
A water heater can be a dangerous appliance, especially if installed by an amateur and neglected for long periods. Maintenance will safeguard your home from leaks that can cause fire hazards, faulty water temperatures, gas line leaks and more. Learn more about water heaters here.
