When is it Time to Replace Plumbing?
March 31, 2021
We typically don’t think about our pipes and plumbing regularly. It’s only when there is an issue that we notice plumbing at all. And while you might be dreading the very thought of replacing your pipes and plumbing in your home, it may not be so scary after all.
Thankfully, some signs tell you that it’s time to replace plumbing. Here is what to look out for:
Water Discoloration: Notice that your water isn’t clear? While it could be any number of plumbing issues, one of the biggest causes of water discoloration in your home is due to old, rusty pipes. It could also mean that there is a leak meaning that dirt, tree roots, or other foreign objects have infiltrated your pipes.
Low Water Pressure: If your water isn’t flowing as it should, there could be many different causes such as clogged pipes or drains, issues with your water supply, broken water fixtures, or leaks in your plumbing system. Leaks in your pipes, caused by age or other factors, are never good. Get leaky pipes repaired right away to avoid further damage.
Old House: Unless you’re replaced piping recently or you have a new home build, chances are that your pipes are outdated. In the past, different materials were used for plumbing like galvanized steel, lead, or iron. Over time, these types of pipes can become corroded, develop pinhole leaks, or can be unsafe. Consider replacement if you live in an older home.
To gauge the life expectancy of your pipes, keep this in mind:
- Brass - 40-70+ yrs
- Copper - 50+ yrs
- Galvanized Steel - 20-50 yrs
- Cast iron - 75-100 yrs
- Polyvinyl chloride (known as PVC) - Indefinitely
When Pipe Replacement Isn’t an Option
If pipe replacement isn’t an option for you due to budget or other factors, consider hydrojetting to clear your pipes without the use of harsh chemicals.
