What Causes Rusty Water?
February 15, 2021
As part of your morning routine, you wake up and head to the bathroom to brush your teeth. As you turn on the tap, you notice brown discolored water. Yikes!
Or perhaps you start to notice a reddish-brown stain in your tub, your sink, or other water fixtures.
Sometimes there may be a foul smell or taste to your water as well. And while that’s enough to make anyone panic, there are ways to fix it!
So what exactly does cause rusty water?
There are a few reasons why the water in your home looks rusty, yellowish, or reddish. Here are some common causes:
Old Worn Pipes
If you have an older home, chances are you have old pipes made out of galvanized steel. Over time, water will break down the pipes, causing rust to seep into your water supply. Consider replacing old water lines.
Well Water
Homes with well water are susceptible to rusty water due to high levels of iron in the ground. There are treatments to remedy this issue such as water softeners and advanced filtration systems. Consult with your plumber to discuss the best option for you and your home.
Public or Municipal Water Source
Sometimes the issue isn’t with anything in your home, but with the public or municipal water source. There could be a water main break somewhere in the city-run line. Call your local water source to check if there is a malfunction.
Hot Water Heater
If you’re only noticing discolored water when using hot water, it could be your water heater. The heating element found inside water heaters will deteriorate over time. Also, sediment and rust buildup in the tank may make it into your hot water pipes. Once corrosion begins in your water heater, it’s not likely to last long. Replace before you’re left without hot water!
The Faucet
Faucets will wear and rust over time. If you’re only noticing the rusty water at one faucet, it’s likely the cause. If you’re able to, replace the old worn fixture.
