How to Unclog a Toilet Without a Plunger
October 1, 2020
It’s something we dread—a clogged toilet. If it’s not already an unpleasant experience on its own, it could be even worse if you’re not prepared. There are ways that you can unclog a blocked toilet should you not have a plunger on hand.
Here are some ways to unclog a toilet without a plunger:
- Hot water — In most cases, hot water may be enough to break apart a clog. Carefully pour hot water into the bowl and let it sit for a few minutes, then flush.
- Dish soap — The dish soap will act as a lubricant and can help clear the block in addition to just using water. Add a ¼ cup of dish soap and wait 15-20 minutes for it to work on the clog. Then, add hot water and let it sit again a few minutes before flushing.
- Wire hanger — Wire hangers can help you reach into the toilet without touching to free up stubborn clogs. Simply bend the hanger and work it into the bowl much like you would a drain snake.
- Baking soda & vinegar — Add a cup of baking soda to the toilet bowl and then pour in a cup of vinegar. Pour the vinegar slowly to avoid spilling or overflow. Wait 20 minutes to let the chemical reaction occur.
- Epsom salts & bath bombs — Similar to baking soda & vinegar, adding Epsom salts and bath bombs can help to move a clog. Place in the bowl and allow the fizzy reaction to work on the blockage.
- Toilet brush — If you have a toilet brush on hand, you could use it like you would a plunger. Start by thrusting into the bowl. Consider replacing after you’re done using.
- Wet/Dry Vacuum — As a last resort, you can use a wet/dry vacuum to remove water. Then, you can use an old rag to create a seal on the vacuum and then clear away the blockage. Make sure to wear gloves.
Make sure to not keep flushing the toilet until the clog has cleared. This causes water to rise over the edge of the bowl and lead to potential flooding in your bathroom. If you notice the water continues to rise, shut off the valve connected to the toilet to avoid additional water flow.
