Not Working at All
If you notice that your sump pump is not working at all, especially during periods of heavy rain, it is crucial to have it looked at as soon as possible.  One thing you can do is examine your basement for any signs of water damage to the flooring or mold growth around the sump pump reservoir. This typically indicates a sump pump that no longer drains water properly.

A way to test this is to pour a small amount of water into the sump pump reservoir. If your sump pump is in working order, the float will rise and the sump pump will turn on, draining the water out of the reservoir or pit. If it fails to kick on, you need to get in touch with a professional right away.

Odd Noises
If you notice excessive noise when the pump kicks in, your pump may be failing or getting ready to fail. While all sump pumps will make noises when they are draining water, a damaged sump pump will make some distinct noises such as thumping or grinding and should be inspected immediately.

Keeps Running when the Reservoir is Empty
A pump that won’t stop running may have a number of issues, one of which may be a damaged float. If your reservoir is empty of water yet the pump keeps running, it can wear the motor out very quickly and expose your home to damage once it stops working altogether. If you notice this, unplug it right away and call us.

Old Age
