7 Ways How to Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing This Holiday Season Part 2
February 7, 2017
Now that the holidays have come and gone, it is important to take this time to make sure your pipes are protected against the coming cold. So far, this winter has been pretty mild, but don't get too comfortable; your plumbing is still at risk! We at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing in Levittown want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to prevent the disaster of your pipes freezing and bursting. Trust us, you don't want that bill.
Just in case, it's better to take a few precautions. We have listed some options for you to consider, continuing from our last blog:
4. Drip your sinks.
If you have a slow drip from your faucets, built up pressure in your pipes will be relieved, so even if they do freeze, there will be less likelihood of a rupture. Choosing one sink for this task is good, but make sure it is the furthest sink from where the water comes into the house, that way the water is in flow throughout all of your home's pipes.
5. Turn off the water.
When in doubt, just turn your water off. In worst-case scenarios where temperatures drop lower than usual, when your house is unoccupied, or when you are sleeping, it is better to just shut it down. By doing this, you are limiting the spillage from a burst pipe to just the water in that pipe.
6. Use a space heater.
If you have unprotected pipes, you can use a space heater to protect them simply by turning it on. Keep in mind, your pipes don't need to be toasty warm; they just need to be kept above freezing.
7. Open cabinet doors.
It is very common for plumbing that runs to a kitchen sink to be vulnerable and not insulated. Because of this, it is wise to open up your cabinet doors to project heat into that space. You can also use an electric heater here as well for extra support.
While we cannot promise your pipes won't freeze, we can still give you support when you are in need. Be sure to call us with any questions or for any of our services. We are always available to help you keep your plumbing in tip-top shape. These steps will not only reduce your risk, but they will ease your mind as you prepare for the freezing weather to come.
