4 Tips to Help Prevent a Plumbing Disaster During the Holiday Season
December 23, 2015
When entertaining friends or family during the holidays, the last thing you need to deal with is a plumbing disaster. However, they can be difficult to avoid with all of that cooking, cleaning, dishwashing, and showering going on. If you are trying to evade having to deal with a plumbing problem either during the holidays or throughout the winter season, consider some of the following tips below:
- When cleaning up after cooking or cleaning you should never put cooking oils or fats down the drain because they will solidify in the pipes and clog them.
- Do not put any fibrous or hard-to-grind food down the drain. While you might get away with doing this once in a while, all of those leftovers from those big holiday family dinners could cause your garbage disposal to malfunction.
- Tell everyone visiting your home to only flush toilet paper down the toilet. Unless told otherwise, your guests will probably flush paper, tissues, and countless other things down the toilet that will likely clog your pipes and cause the toilet to overflow.
- If you are playing host to some family and friends during the holidays, you should have them wait at least 10 minutes between showering. If they go in one after the other, some of them might be taking warm or cold showers. What's more, if you have a lot of dishes or laundry to do while your guests are staying over, consider running your dishwasher and doing laundry at night to make sure your guests have hot water.
