How to Prepare Your Plumbing for Winter
December 3, 2018
As the seasons change, the home plumbing issues you encounter will, too. In our new video, we'll show you some of the most common problems that our customers face as the weather gets colder. Check it out now!
Fortunately, you don't have to worry about flooding, excessive water bills, or holiday plumbing catastrophes when you take these steps to prepare your home for winter.
Turn Off Your Outdoor Faucets
Your home's outdoor faucets are fully exposed to the elements. Before the temperatures in your area dip below freezing, remember to turn off all water to your outside hose bib and disconnect your hose. Then, open the bleeder caps on your faucets' shut-off valves to drain any excess water from your pipes.
Insulate Water Pipes in Unheated Areas
Do you have pipes in your unheated garage, attic, or crawl space? To keep your water flowing smoothly all winter long, use a heat cable, and then cover it with pipe insulation. Heat tape and foam sleeves can all serve as effective insulation materials if installed properly from a license professional.
Check Your Water Heater
Cold showers in January aren't much fun either, so call Ben Franklin Plumbing, a trusted plumbing company near New Hope, to give your water heater a fall check-up. We'll ensure that your water heater is performing optimally as the cold weather approaches.
Don't Turn the Temperature Too Low
Are you traveling this holiday season? You may want to turn the heat way down and save on your energy bill — but you'll end up spending significantly more to fix burst pipes! To protect against frozen pipes, you have two choices:
- Keep your temperature at 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
- Shut off your home's main water supply, then turn each faucet on to drain all the water from your pipes.
Open Your Cabinet Doors
When you close your cabinet doors, the heat from the rest of your home can't reach the kitchen plumbing inside. That's why we recommend opening your cabinet doors to help the heat circulate when it's particularly cold outside. You can even point a portable heater inside the cabinets under your sink.
Leave the Water Running
Sometimes, a dripping faucet can be a good thing. When you are facing extremely cold temperatures, a trickling faucet can relieve the pressure that can build up in your pipes and help protect them against splitting and bursting open.
