How Do I Prepare for a Plumbing Repair?
July 14, 2019
For the most part, hiring a plumber is a low-to-no effort process. You call, tell them your problem, they show up, fix it, done. This works just fine. However, if you’re interested in making the plumbing repair process work even better, you’re in the right place.
Just like with any undertaking, a little extra effort can take your next plumbing repair experience from good to great. That’s why we’ve put together this easy preparation guide. It’s got tips on how to make things easier before, during, and after the visit. A little bit of reading and you’ll be the number one plumbing prep expert in your family. If that doesn’t earn you the accolades you deserve, we don’t know what will.
Before
- Do a little research. This step comes before anything else, even the initial call. Don’t just call the first plumbing company you find on Google or in the phone book. Take the time to read a few reviews. Ask close friends and family for recommendations. Choosing the best company in the first place will help you to avoid additional visits or repairs down the line.
- Inspect the rest of your home’s plumbing. If you called a plumber, it’s for a specific reason. Since you’re going to have a plumbing technician in your home anyway, now is a great time to look around. Check to make sure there aren’t additional problems they could help fix.
- Clean and clear the area they’ll be working in. This is an easy way to make things easier for everyone. Clear away anything that might be disruptive to their work before they show up. That way, once they’re there, everything can get moving more quickly. Depending on why they’re visiting, the plumber might need to access your main water line. Take the time to know where it is so you don’t have to scramble to find out if they ask.
During the repair
- Be communicative. Share any information that may be relevant to the completion of the job. Give as many details as possible to your plumber. You’ll be surprised how valuable your knowledge can be.
- Make sure pets and children are out of the way. There are a lot of pet-related plumbing problems out there. The main one, though, is when they get in the way when a technician is trying to work. Plan ahead for an alternative space for children and pets to be in while repairs are being done. This could be a perfect time to call grandma and ask for a little baby and puppy-sitting help. Doing this will make sure work is done efficiently and your little ones are safe.
- Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions. Any good plumber will be happy to help you become better at taking care of your home’s plumbing. That includes answering questions. As long as you respect the workspace, don’t feel afraid to treat a repair as a learning experience.
After
- Write information down. If your plumber gives you any pertinent information, write it down. The plumbing repair process can be stressful for a homeowner. You don’t want to accidentally forget anything important.
- Keep an eye on things. Make sure to keep an eye on the repaired area over the next few weeks. Monitor your water bill, too. You’ll want to verify that the job was done correctly and notice right away if something goes wrong.
