How to Quickly Handle a Plumbing Emergency
August 15, 2014
When you encounter a plumbing emergency, your first instinct may be to call us at Ben Franklin for help. However, in certain types of emergencies, like a clogged toilet or sink drain, there are a few simple ways to take care of the problem quickly and temporarily before we get there. This ensures that the issue doesn’t get out of control.
Clogged Sinks and Drains
Although most slow drains are annoying, some can cause the water flow in your sink to stop completely. Although this requires the attention of a plumbing professional, you can clear your clogged drain using the baking soda method. To do this:
- Pour a pot of boiling hot water down your drain
- Dump about half a cup of baking soda down the drain
- Take approximately one cup of vinegar and another cup of hot water, and pour them on top of the baking soda
- Cover the drain and let it sit for five to 10 minutes
After taking this approach to your plumbing emergency, you may find that water flows down your drain much easier and quicker than before.
Clogged Toilets
There are few things worse than a clogged toilet, especially if the broken one is the only one in your home. To quickly unclog your toilet in an emergency, take a plunger and place the suction end in your toilet bowl. Pump the plunger in the water until the water level starts to go down and try flushing your toilet.
