Be Calm but Take Action If You Suffer a Pipe Break
December 19, 2013
While we’re typically lucky in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in that we don’t usually have extended periods of bitterly cold weather, every once in a while it will happen. When it does, pipes throughout the area are at risk of bursting after they freeze. If you ever have a pipe break in your home, the Dallas professionals with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® of Dallas want to help you minimize damage while you wait for one of our technicians to come to your home and fix the problem.
What You Need to Do
By taking quick action, you can reduce the chances of sustaining major damage due to wood decay, rusted metal, warped plywood, mildew formation and much more if you have a pipe break in your home.
- The very first thing you need to do, is to find the main water shut off to your home. In some homes it is found along the main line that goes from the meter to your home, while in others it can be found in various places. Give us a call and we’ll help you find yours.
- Next, turn on all of your cold taps to help drain water. Turn off the water heater, turn on all of the hot taps, and then flush your toilet. This should clear your lines of any remaining water.
- Call a plumber so the problem can be taken care of and you can get back to normal.
