Installing a New Plumbing Fixture in Your Home
July 25, 2012
Installing your own new plumbing fixtures requires some specialized tools, plenty of patience and a good dose of elbow grease. For many homeowners, this task is a satisfying do-it-yourself project, while for others, it is the last thing they want to spend doing on a Saturday afternoon. Our plumbing experts offer these tips for installing a plumbing fixture in your home.
When selecting a new fixture, be sure to take careful measurements of your existing fixture or wait to purchase the new fixture until you have removed the old one from its location.
Begin by turning off the water supply to the area of your home where you will install the new fixture. Turn on the faucet so any remaining water in the pipe drains out of the fixture. Have an old towel handy in case of drips when you disconnect the fixture.
With an Allen wrench, loosen the screw holding the fixture to the sink.
From underneath the sink, use a wrench to loosen the nuts holding down the fixture. Carefully lift the fixture away from the sink. Clean all of the areas where the fixture was located using a mild cleaner and an old towel to soak up any water.
Place the new drain into position and put the new faucet into place. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts. Take care when tightening the nuts so that you do not strip the threads.
Turn on the water supply and test the faucet and drain for leaks. You may need plumber’s putty or plumbers tape to seal any leaks.
