How is Dallas water quality maintained?
Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) maintains water for over 2.4 million Dallas area residents. While a large portion of DWU customers reside in Dallas, the DWU also serves wholesale customer cities for both treated and untreated water. Customers are metered for accurate billing as DWU is a not-for-profit department of the city of Dallas and is funded via rates paid by customers.
The seven sources that fill the Dallas water supply source a 699-square-mile service area. Water comes from lakes, streams, ponds, rivers and other sources and is safe to drink after meeting state and federal standards for water quality.
What’s in the water?
There’s no need to worry about any major health risks by drinking Dallas water, but with any water source, you should expect a small level of contaminants. High levels of contaminants will have an effect on your health, but you can sleep easy at night knowing there are certain regulations set in place in order to ensure safe drinking water quality.
Common impurities found in water include:
- Pesticides
- Lead
- Mercury
- Sediment
- Zinc
- Chlorine
It’s safe to drink, but sometimes the water coming out of your faucet might smell funny or have a distinct taste you’re not too fond of. That’s because there are impurities left in your water by the time it reaches your home, and you don’t need to settle. Consider installing a water filtration system to eliminate chemicals and odors.
